From Powerful Gods and Gift-Shop Shenanigans, Moon Knight Lands on Disney+

Moon Knight is the latest Marvel show to hit Disney+ this Spring, with the previous show Hawkeye being a moderate success with critics and fans alike, how well does Moon Knight do?

I was really excited about this show, for the last month and a half I had seen it advertised everywhere. Wherever there was a screen you can bet there was a trailer for Moon Knight playing.

The marketing felt a little bombastic towards the end, every hour I’d see marvel sharing another trailer or some clips or interviews. I was getting a little sick of it and just chose not to watch anything until the show released, to not spoil myself.

There’s only been one episode released today, the 30th of March, compared to other shows like Wandavision which released two on its first day airing. The episode was around 47 minutes long and was packed to the brim with hightail action and absolute chaos in every scene.

I’ve got to say I absolutely loved this show, Oscar Isaac does an amazing performance as Steven Grant. The backgrounds and on-shoot locations really make the show pop, it’s not dark and gritty but light and colourful.

The comedy is top tier with most coming from the awkward interactions Steven has with the villains and just everyday people around him. My favourite comedic part of the episode being the vehicle chase scene, Steven is driving away in a cupcake truck, confused beyond belief as to how he got there.

He’s being chased by the bad guys who all have guns and big, black muscle cars. But the highlight is the soundtrack of the scene, Wham’s ‘Wake me up before you go go’. It’s there for no reason and takes out any tension in the scene but it still works really well and makes the fight more fun.

So far, we only get a brief glimpse of the Moon Knight costume towards the end of the episode, so I can’t really judge it at this point but from the looks of it, I like it!

Now I can’t really talk about the disorder Steven has, simply because I don’t know enough about it to shed some light on if it was represented greatly or poorly. But I will say I did relate to his memory issues, for the life of me my memory has troubled me since day one.

I’ve never been able to remember anything I’ve been told or seen; it’s been a disadvantage for sure but sometimes a life saver for when you wish you had never seen something in the first place. And I like how it’s treated in this show, again I can’t speak for everyone, but usually in media memory loss or anything related tends to be played off as a joke.

Oh? You forgot about that extremely important evening with your boss? It’s fine, we’ll laugh then make some big elaborate plan to save you.

Did you forget about your friend's birthday? It’s okay we’ll laugh about how panicked you are then do a whole funny skit where you scramble to be a good friend.

And so on.

It’s just nice to see something like this, even if not a big issue to some, to be shed in a more relatable way and not mocked.

I also have to mention the music, the score in just this episode alone is fantastic and it makes me eager to hear what the rest of the show will sound like. I absolutely adore the credits' theme, this big orchestral track with beats from Egyptian instruments and how it flows so well together.

I’ve always loved the history of Ancient Egypt, so Moon Knight always stuck out to me as a favourite, I mean, a anti-hero that’s all about Egyptian Gods? Who wouldn’t like that?

The action as I briefly mentioned with the car chase is amazing, it’s funny because you don’t really see much of it as Steven blacks out as his other identities take over. It makes for some great comedy and some confusion when Steven awakes and is covered in blood with bodies surrounding him.

It’s what makes the Moon Knight reveal at the end so good, throughout the episode you’re being teased about his abilities. Not exactly seeing what he’s capable of but showing the aftermath, and it leaves you wondering how this guy who talks to a fish for a friend is capable of such horrible and brutal things.

I also really like the slow reveal of his alter egos, finding the phone in the wall and calling the number, the Egyptian God, Khonshu, that follows him around, the lights flickering when something is about to go down. It all works so well and if the rest of the show is like this, it might be my new favourite; sorry Wandavision.

With promises from the Moon Knight team that there will be greater connections to the MCU, it makes me very excited to see how the show will progress.

Moon Knight gets 4 out of 5 scarabs from me.

Moon Knight is available to stream on Disney+.
