Marvel's star attraction: Loki, hits Disney Plus

Loki is the third Disney Plus show to be released by cinema giant, Marvel Studios.

Following on from the immediate events of Avengers: Endgame, Loki is thrown into a world of high power and mystery. Landing in the clutches of the TVA, he stands trial for his deviation from the sacred timeline and faces off against those who work there; all while solving a bigger mystery.

This show has a wonderful first episode, similar to Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it throws you straight into the action without wasting time setting up the how’s and why’s. The cast so far are amazing, of course with reoccurring talent like Tom Hiddleston playing the titular character for the past ten years, it’s bound to be good. New comers to the MCU, like Owen Wilson and Wunmi Mosaku, are a great addition and I personally love the interactions between all three characters whenever they’re in a scene together.

The settings and backdrops are outstanding, personally it rivals that of Wandavision for me. I love the idea of having a really advanced organisation with gold, towering rooms but they use 70’s décor and write with typewriters; it’s little details like that which make me swoon so much. The cinematography of the show was spectacular, especially for a first episode, and I can’t wait to see what more things we’ll see in later episodes.

As for the main plot of the episode, it serves its purpose well enough, meaning that it introduces the audience to the TVA and allows them to get a feel of what the show will be like. Unlike Wandavision, Loki gets straight into the plot within the first few minutes and focuses its efforts on keeping the audience as confused as their main character.

My personal favourite moment from this episode, which was also shown in the trailer, was Loki becoming D.B Cooper. For those who aren’t into true crime, D.B Cooper is an old case, a man stepped onto a plane with a bomb and demanded money, when the plane was in the air he jumped out and was never found. Marvel retconning this to be Loki gave me a good laugh, and weirdly enough, makes a lot of sense.

Additionally, the small slither of a bigger story luring in the background gives me chills for what’s to come. It’s a very Marvel thing to drip feed their audience hints of bigger and better things, and Disney Plus shows are no exception. I just hope this time we don’t go too over bored with the theories; I'm looking at you Ralph Boner.

Even though the Falcon and the Winter Soldier was seen as the ‘buddy-cop’ show, I think it’s safe to say Loki will have a better chance at that with the witty banter between Mobius, Owen Wilson, and Loki, Tom Hiddleston. The pair definitely steal the show, bearing that they haven’t introduced that many characters yet to the plot.

All in all, Loki will definitely be a favourite among fans and it’s not very hard to see why. Besides being one of the most popular characters in the MCU, the show hits it stride within the first few minutes; something not many of these Marvel shows have done so far. I can’t say it beats Wandavision for me just yet, but give it a few more episodes and it just might!
